WE ARE BUYING LIKE   MAD RIGHT NOW, GETTING READY FOR THE NEW YEAR... i have most of the garden iron ordered and its going to be a lot... nice big arches like the one above in my garden at home...gazebos, lots of trellises, benches, fences, all kinds of planters,from huge to nice and small , also hanging planters armillaries, wall baskets,  trikes, topiary....etc etc etc...WE ARE GETTING SOME POTTERY   THIS YEAR TOO....AND I HOPE THOSE NICE BIG   CHIMES....

we go to the gift show in a few days...that's in Chicago where we order from the big companies...i hope i can find the right stuff... its really HARD!!! what i like is usually   pretty oddball or way too expensive so i try not to go there on everything....altho we do have a lot of fun   oddball customers too...THANK HEAVENS....
AND THIS YEAR I WANT TO KEEP WATCHING THE PRICES AND NOT GET TOO HIGH...EXCEPT FOR A FEW THINGS..
i like this time of year to   change things around and   work on new ideas....

our furniture is MADE IN INDIANA... which is a good feeling for us and the buyers...and especially for the carpenters who do the work...

we are getting so much in now....I'm EXCITED ABOUT INDUSTRIAL .... the inventory is building.... lots of pails, baskets, crates, a weird table made out of gears.... a huge fan, old indiana sap buckets, metal tool boxes, and most fun of all...old metal file drawers... i love anything with little drawers or cubby holes....

i find myself buying junk that could be turned into robot parts....I'm seeing robot possibilities everywhere...

its been a great fall...with so much happening..THE STORE IS PACKED....
.. we are trying to   figure out how to ship our counters and offer them on line... we cant find a reasonable price for the shipping part....people far away want our stuff and we just   lose almost every chance to sell to them..... we are trying tho..
another project is   getting   a giant junk sculpture down on the highway at our turn...i want to go to the farm junkyard with jon and pick something out to build on....
the store is rolling along and   many days the recession seems to be   over....we have been so busy.... our recycled, repurposed projects are really selling....
so its pretty good herre
oh and also our INDUSTRIAL   SELECTIONS ARE GROWING FAST.... i like that a lot....

another project for me is to learn computer better ...especially collaging with my ipad app...my grandson is helping me....

busy busy time... geting ready for the fall season...we have bought tons and now are trying to get it up and displayed.... you hate to see summer passing by so fast.... but for us after the yardsale comes fall....its a wierd store calendar...

jon and i with the big salvage guy.... he sells all over the country ....and it was so neat to meet him...lots of our neatest stuff comes from his efforts in the city...he brought us 2 big oak mirrors too...and some stained glass..and another big chicago cabinet... the best pieces will be going up to the amish crew to be rehabbed and brought back to their original beautiful condition.....

i think its interesting that this stuff has been in trucks on the dan ryan in chicago then will go to an amish workshop where only horse drawn transportation is allowed...

..i think this year we are still all about the junk...you know we are big into repurposing furniture but this time of year we are all about GOOD garden junk..... you can do so much with so little.....and ITS SO MUCH FUN.....

we have 2 more big piles of tin right now, the good old kind.....and also a new shipment of 2x2 ft squares of new tin.........and lots of big panels plus more recycled antique tin front counters....these are great for islands or store cash wraps or just big focus points...right now we have an 8 ft long one...

WE HAVE BIRDS UNDER THE AWNING TRYING TO NEST, THE BACK PORCH IS FILLING UP FAST....TONS OF NEW GREENERY AND FLORALS ARE IN....

running the store this time of year is really scary..... tons of orders coming in now ....and now isn't really a busy time of year..in other words we are spending lots more than we are taking in....if dh seems harried that's probably why......its called faith i guess... we buy now to sell later...ANYWAY i think we got good stuff this year for spring and summer and hope our wonderful customers agree......

our economic view is ....THINGS ARE GETTING WAY BETTER, I'm hearing good reports from lots of parts of the retail/show/junk/boutique world......all kinds of business people flow thru the store and i love to hear their reports.... and we are still here and hoping for another good year...

MAINLY WE ARE BROKE....but it happens every year at this time and so far its always worked out..... we have to buy way before it sells..... ...so now we have wonderful stuff coming in weekly.... from our orders at the big market in Chicago.... 2 big pallet loads this week..... and then real soon a big load of garden iron....from gazebos to small baskets.... we should have a great selection and a bit cheaper this year.....

so the store looks packed and loaded for spring and summer.... we completely revamped the back porch too..and 2 more big loads on their way this week....

early spring is just dang hard on the checkbook!!!....we can have a great day selling and DH STILL SAYS ITS NOT ENOUGH....

FOO FOO...Ruth went wild at Chicago....she got more butterflies, new flowers, including the huge paper ones, pink boas and sunglasses, fun signs for the mamas...that room has become a big favorite of the little girls...

the fluffers and the floppers

CUTEST WORDS OF THE WEEK.....FROM LISA..at the store we have the fluffers who try and get the store displayed, and make all the furniture and merchandise look its best at all times.......and the floppers who do the work of lugging the stuff around and arranging it like the flluffers want.... guess what ...sometimes we have a floppers revolt...when they let their real beliefs out....they think the fluffers are silly and arbitrary....

so heres how lisa put it....

"DONT EVEN TRY TO GET INTO THE MIND OF THE FLUFFERS.."

shes such a good sport tho....and a cheery influence on the workdays...and as you can see in the other picture the fluffers and the floppers can be friends...

i really think the fuffers appreciate the floppers more than the opposite... we know they are the ones who unload the trucks, fix about anything, and do all the hard stuff..... so why cant the floppers appreciate the fluffers who make their efforts look as good as possible so the customers will buy and pay us all.....

OTH...its neat to me how much crossover there is.... lisa made some very cool birdhouses this week...look under the awning for the one with an earring and a fringe of bottle caps that spin....and jon definitly designs lots of our furniture...as well as unloading the trucks...

BUT IF A NAIL IS HAMMERED IN WRONG ITS DANG THOSE FLUFFERS....

here are some of our things that i think would be great for a store display .....

we sell to so many neat stores and businesses....especially the indie outside the box kinds of places.... where the owners need something besides ikky particle board..and boring design.......

... dang, we never do shows so mostly they have to come here....but we do have a huge inventory at all times with plenty to pick from.......the buyer we dream about is one who flies in, loves our stuff and buys and sends her truck for pick up....... we can store things for you till you can pick up...we dont do lay away or custom work....

we have a new idea that i hope some far away businesses will use....and thats buying from us thru pictures and phone calls and then working out the shipping with upack..... or some place like that...

.we can pack a truck but we cant crate or put things on pallets...... we cant arrange shipping.....

its a parade out there some days.....yesterday i overheard 2 girls, teens, i think they were there with their mom, one said this place has weird stuff...and her sister said what do you expect its and antique store!!! i think they were looking at our wonderful rare mannequin head with real hair... or maybe it was the salt and peppers...

then 2 real loyal and valued and favorite customers were in and complained that the stuff they really liked has been pushed out of the foo foo room and now its in the bathroom..oh dear...i felt bad on that one.....we do still have a couple of shelves of the old foo foo in the new foo foo........ but its true, we have changed it over a lot..to a princess and diva room as well......

and Ruth is getting so many compliments for all the revamping we have done lately......I'm afraid one dear old customer even thought it wasn't us anymore...we laugh shes getting all the credit...well she is kind of a wonder..... we have job divisions ...the fluffers and the floppers.... the floppers did most of the big dramatic work but the fluffers get the credit..... ruth and i laid out a different floor plan and some big changes for them to do and while dh and i were in florida in january ...they made some major moves and fixed up the bathroom too.....they, jon and lisa, moved walls!!! i was thrilled with the results, they really did a great job...

we have seen lots of stores thru here this winter..
...and from them im hearing some real good vibes about the economy..... we have a lot of store customers, mostly for our big display pieces....i never know for sure how they find us but some are from customers generous referrals........ we sell to a lot of salons and a lot of boutiques and garden centers and some restaurants too....any cool independent kind of place that needs interesting pieces...

I LOVE MY KIDS.... you see Jon on here and at the store and my daughter is hard At work in Carmel indiana... http://www.bellachicinteriors.com/ ....they are both open to some wild ideas and outside the box thinking...which to me is usually a BIG PLUS....and they are both totally involved in the antique world.......
here's Jon's idea for me..... he and i would tour the underbelly of Detroit with Jon's buddy who knows all the good places to scrounge for junk....the good suppliers of the things coming out on the market from the horrible devastation of Detroit.....the guide goes into the deepest most deserted parts of detroit and buys old tin and architectural parts...i assume before the wrecking ball gets there... the friend tells tales of parts of detroit where whole blocks have burned down and places with no fire or police protection..... Jon wants us to take a big shopping trip up there with the box truck , him and a bunch of cash....jon brings this up everytime i gripe because we dont have enough smalls.....

jon has been working with a lot of people on custom tables and also counters..... this is new for us and working out pretty well.....
something i cant figure out is how can we,greenoak , a very small business in the scheme of thngs, build a great big cupboard for under 300$$ with local carpenters, and the big companies cant build a 100$$$ purse in america . .... JUST SAYIN... our cupboards, counters,tv stands bookshelves, tin panels and a lot more are MADE IN INDIANA....

I'm totally in the right industry.... it fits me like a glove.... me being curious,bossy, creative, bored easily, speedy, love to buy!!!!! and love beautiful things and totally enjoy outside the box people...and i l totally live the idea of reusing, revamping, making something better and useful ....

. a different track might mean or have meant more money, i went to college but as an english major!!! lol... ...but I'm making enough and i really love it..its still totally interesting to me....in art and antiques you never learn the whole thing..there is always something new and neat to see or learn about...

. another good thing....no boss...like we said in the old days...DO YOUR OWN THING... and that is so sweet....usually .

.... fulfillment besides money has always been my top priority....i couldn't work at a hateful job unless i really had to.. i enjoy the money too....duh....
MY LIST FOR 2011.....
my list so far is all about keeping the store a great destination.... about store layout,,,,what to drop what to add., how to appeal to my core girls more....and upgrading our web....and always a goal is to add 5 or 10% profit and i really want to focus on that.OUR OVERHEAD IS HUGE......little things can mean a lot in that department....
i would like to make really good choices....it totally matters...we do things by messy consensus dh, son jon and me.... its not ever in black and white...we all have different views of the world.... and try to defer to each other as much as possible... actually i like to hear about anybodies idea about how to run a store....

TEKK LIFE.....
my biggest thrill was back when vcrs could catch my soap if i got a customer and had to miss something.... in the old days when we were just open a couple days a week.......
my total headache is that i cant grasp any universality, in how things work now....if there is any....hardly any of it makes sense to me..... i have maybe 15 phones in my life and even they work different.some you dial 1 some not, the finding recall number is all different.....i cant even turn on the radio/ cd player right..he got the best with about 20 buttons,,,,...now , in the car i have sirus radio and at home pandora and cant manage my dream screen...
i love roku and netflix...i dont text or twitter, i make business advances and leaps by pen, as in lists, mind mapping, doodling, drawing or conversation...
one current challenge is sinking but i guess its syncing...AS IN I WANT TO get my picture files into my ipad....
in our world of business ~~~~we had website early, blog early , ebay early, email contact with customers early..facebook early.... its been good for us....
so to all the developers out there...i want it easier and i want everything...

WE ARE FULL OF TIN RIGHT NOW..the good old kind from the early 1900s, .. LOTS IN IN THE ROUGH...AND SOME BEAUTIFUL PATTERNS....

the big 3 square ones are 6 ft tall and about 2 ft wide..weve sold them for so many things... headboards, stove backs, wall art... they are perfect for big tall walls....
these are old and original.....

,AFTER JON fraMES THEM UP, we scraped them down and painted a bit and and sealed them up....
..jon has really been busy making them this week.we have about 15 big panels right now......we also have some great shelves with tin built in....... and lots of counters and cabinets and tv stands , they are so good for big flat screens.....
i love old tin... ..its such a good great looking rehabbing medium for all the funky archetectural styles we do......
for the ones IN OLD ORIGINAL CONDITION , just like they came from the city...check out the back pORch and in the rough room..they are in 2 ft by 2 ft sections mostly....
i like hearing all the ideas you customers have for these great pieces..ITS KIND OF ENDLESS!!!!
..here they are in rural indiana after being salvaged out places in chicago or detroit BY REALLY HARD WORKING GUYS WHO HAVE TO BEAT THE DEMOLITION CREWS...
lots of them have been up there in chicago on the dan ryan and when we get them they might be in an amish workshop , a place without phone, electricity or car....
THESE TINS RUN 120$$$ FOR THE 8 FT ONES ON DOWN TO35$$$ FOR THE SMALLEST ONES..

we have the neatest customers.....this week one was griping because business was so slow ., hes a mortician, another was hoping for busted pipes so he could keep his job , he works for a plumber, and buy his girlfriend 2 grapevine trees for 150$$$$ another pair surprised us, they were belly dancing instructors..

3 this week were remembering our store from 25 yrs ago.....one griped because no free boxes like we used to have, another complained because there were no big jewelry piles to go thru like before, and the other was young and remembered coming in with her mom and getting into the free box we had for kids back then.... and another dear guy told my daughter he was worried about me because of all the chaos at the store.... .......plus our usual fun regulars who keep us on our toes and are always good to see and catch up with.... including the dribblers, who bring cookies and gripe about all our made in china stuff.... ...and once in a while we get wonderful bakers and candy makers who bring us presents....

so this week i thought i would take some time and just post a lot of store pictures with people.... after working here for so long with our fun customers i think it would be hard to just be a regular store where you dont really know most of the people....

we love our customers!!!! and im trying to think up something for the ones who have been coming for 20 yrs or more.....

we had a great weekend ....IF YOU CAME....THaNK YOU....
we had so many fun interesting customers come thru....hard to realize how many have been coming for over 20 yrs!!!
..... and lots of babies too....
the oldest....a wonderful lady over 80 who bought a huge oak Chicago pantry for her collection...
the adviser...., hunter, gave us the idea to put the big tree up on a table....
my funny friend from California......., who picked out her horse's name in the license plate letters to put on his barn door....

we did so much work to get ready for this....moved 2 walls and people seemed to like the more open feel..... all the dishes are out of the dish section and if you need any you must look in the cupboards all around the store...
naturally some things sold great and we ran out and others didnt sell at all....there sure is a lot of guesswork going on when we pick out our inventory....
whats on my mind..... i want to have something special for the facebook fans, and blog fans too...but not sure what yet....
. i know we will have an after Christmas sale... and im hoping for a small second open house if i can come up with an idea.....
on line , our facebook has really taken off....i like the blog more but facebook is taking most of my time for now...
there is a new look i really like.....you can see it in restoration hardware and at a store in australia called http://meandmo-homewares.com.au/ ... its such a beautiful look and you could create it so well using a store like us or just getting out there into the world of old and rehabbed for your house....i love their presentation...im sure our prices are a whole lot better!!!! being in the cheapest state for good junk!!! old new and rehaBBED... .....its a lot of white , but not shabby or romantic, rather white and some wood and metal, nice lines and kind of manly or scientific.......and spare...we have or have had many of the same pieces.
...i like our white furniture....but the black still sells the best....

WE HAVE ABOUT 9 COUNTERS ON HAND RIGHT NOW.... jon got wonderful ceiling tin from chicago and they have made some real beauties....lots of big ones, some white some black.... lots of diffferent door configurations.... stores from all over have bought these as cash wraps or counters or just as big parts of store displays...we wholesale ...

most of ours go into houses as bars, islands or major huge tv stands.... our customers are SO INVENTIVE!!!!

some frustrations...

.we dont ship and several times this year people from far away fans from far away want to buy our big stuff.... IF YOU CAN FIGURE OUT THE SHIPPING it can work...4 women this year have figured out how to get our stuff.... they somehow got a big truck to our door and we loaded furniture on to it...so its possible.....the people who managed delivery...saw something they liked on one of our sites , called me,got more indfo maybe a picture or 2, decided if they wanted it , paid me, and then they figured out the shipping...we can wrap but not crate....im talking big stuff...we definitley arent interested in shipping little stuff.... that would just be a whole new business...

we have always been cash and carry, as is where is kind of place... we dont do custom....

our cash wraps and counters are so popular and would fit into so many stores...but we just arent out there where the buyers are... so many get here tho, which we are VERY THANKFUL for...

lasT WEEK WE GOT ABOUT 50 MORE LANTERNS....NOW TO DECORATE THEM AND FIND PLACES FOR THEM.....most are on the back porch.... you can make your own fall scene in them and then later change it to christmas....its so easy , and we have lots of battery candles to help you....

and we are happy to say many little girls love our new foo foo room...

US......DH AND I, SON JON ,and once in a while grandkids, Matthew and Josh who have started going to yardsales with jon..and terri...who does somuch on line for us, spreading the word about our work.....we buy and buy and design and design.....and try hard to get the right stuff.and keep it reasonable and keep the store going....
.. some of the best things come from 3 carpenter groups that we work with...men who make our ideas and designs into reality...and almost always at an affordable price....

there is carpenter group #1.....a big family effort...2 retired brothers, sometimes their grandkids and definitely their lodge.... this group produces over half of our cabinets..WE HAVE A WHOLE BUILDING FULL OF THEIR WORK....AND people and STORES ALL OVER INDIANA and beyond HAVE bought THEIR CUPBOARDS....we've been together for over 10 yrs.
then there is carpenter group #2...an Amish family , father and son...they rehabb our big antique oak pieces from Chicago.....they are very very skilled and will tackle about anything having to do with wood.......they are reliable and willing and able to fix up the wonderful relics we get .... like our big huge oak cabinets ..sometimes 6 ft wide and 7 ft tall.....we get these big beauties from scrap guys in Chicago...they save them from buildings going under the wrecking ball....i figure our big things have ridden down the Dan Ryan freeway to us then hauled to the Amish carpenter family for revival by guys who still go by horse and buggy...and no electric... they do have a very high tekk workshop run by gas i guess......we have worked together for several years..
the last carpenter group is a one man show..see his picture above....he makes most of the wonderful recycled things...like the big counters using our old parts..and the big fun things out of old doors...we have sold his work all around the state and to dealers a nd shops and show people all over the country... one even went to a big fancy show in new yorK....

i guess my thought today is about how much 7 or 8 people can do together ...outside big corporate America...inside america not in china, right here in INDIANA.......
and definitely in my favorite place...OUTSIDE THE BOX...

incoming this week was mostly furniture.some big counters..lots of china cabinets, 2 big chunky dining room tables and chairs,, lots of nice low wide cabinets that are good for tvs...

the foo foo room has some good kids shelves in it...one bright pink....

we have gone kind of crazy on black this week...several big pieces

nice highboys and several big buffets....

mainly this week we have been packing up for the yardsale..... the 50c row will be totally full!!! i hope someone comes who needs lots of little cheap stuff for their projects or to sell.... lots and lots of glass there, probably 20 or 30 glass cups from punch bowl sets, and huge amounts of old jewelry and rows of old books and piles of vintage linens and all our old scarves....

this week we probably packed up 40 or 50 boxes....we ve packed up really good stuff for the 4$ row too...i figure if ive had it too long out it goes!!!!

we are just getting started on the yardsale work....its our biggest event of the year..AND TONS OF WORK OF COURSE........ the postcards are made...now just to stamp them all....
we still have a couple of weeks to get everything done..one little task is moving the whole half price room out into the yard.... cant wiat for that day....ha ha....

..the little garage sale building is full and now we are sending things to another secret storage place....
HOPE YOU CAN COME ....and if you know any serious junkers please send them our way..... there will be really good stuff too!!! but lots of cheap misc.....ITS SUNDAY AUG 8....AT 9A.M.

jon has been getting some really nice furniture...including a beautiful early white pie safe with 12 tins in a different pattern..... kind of like a crown....its on the back porch....also back there, some more cubbyholes...

so our situation is nice and full ....we are packed ...and more coming in everyday....

we are getting our first commercial ...starting next week on wsbt.....it was so interesting ...the guys came with big lights and took pictures for about 2 hrs....then sat down with us and made up the words... and made everything fit in to 30secs......

i just got the cute sunflower girl at the end the day before...

this was a big decision...we needed a way to show we arent the normal antique store...and hopefully this does it.

..we decided not to put ourselves in it.

..or have us talk....

there are so many ways to look at anything creative...i had about 10 minutes of ideas for the guy and he just condensed it down into 30 seconds!!!

if it doesnt work out...well we have done crazier things...

i really want to have something special for customers who have been coming for over 20 yrs..there are a bunch of them!!!

..one was definitely a fun customer this week.....he said" i just sold something i got from you 30 yrs aGO": I FIGURED IT WAS SOMETHING HE JUST DUG OUT...BUT NO ...HE SAID IT HAD BEEN IN HIS CASE FOR 32 YRS!!!! it was pretty nice...real gold owl with ruby eyes little emeralds for his breast and diamonds on his tail.....

another fun one this week.....a barefoot librarian...in a pretty dress...

......and a little girl telling her mom...you can even shop in the bathroom...

and then there was

....the nice englishman bringing us another oar cupboard...

aND THE HUSBAND of the week has to be the guy who bought his wife 2 big beautiful antique oak drawer units for her cookie cutter collection....

we are so busy at the store....today more iron came in ....including the fun bottle trees, and more benches and the big suns...my supplier calls me from south texas and tells me about all the goodies hes seeing and that i might want... he came today and refilled our garden iron lot...

about a week ago we went to a huge sale and bought a lot..and have smalls packed in everywhere...we bought about 3 boxtruck loads in 2 days...the rough room is packed too...lots of nice small cheap furniture too...chairs, rick rack, nice oak cupboard, victorian chairs, lots of dishes, primitives and more tools.....

this was a great day at work...at auction hoping for a big load....it didnt happen....so many people there and things went high high high!!! wonder who bought the 1000$ book? pictured above....

and several in the crowd bought 100$ fruit jars...im just not that up on fruit jars....

i love the first picture of the broom ...isnt that a perfect symbol of the depression era way of life.... they were so poor and careful...they used that broom up!!!

i bought quite a bit....but not a truck load by any means...dang!!!!

huge amounts of stuff came in last week....wherever you go you will see new things...we dealt with a 2500 lb delivery...about 80 boxes of mostly iron and metal.... brackets, corners, soap dishes, metal tubs and cans, great hooks and plant hangars..chimes and garden stakes......nice big iron dressforms....great for store displays... or to dress for fun...

also a nice big load of old things!!! a big batch of crocks, some iron pots, a copper boiler with lid....more tools and barn misc in the man section, a darling tooled kids saddle, star bricks ,

the carpenters brought more big counters or cash wraps and a very nice bar....and a nice big 5 ft wide porch post cabinet....

lots of fun customers this week.... so many and thanks for coming!!! i hope we are kind of like recess for adults...or as one friend says, mental therapy...

this is one of my favorite projects..
.a simple old door, painted blue, a little roof and legs..
.then we pounded a nail in and hung a mirror....
IT WOULD BE SO NICE IN A LITTTLE COTTAGE...

this is probably our most popular design... ...our porchpost cupboards.... made with 100 yr old porchposts.... we have sold lots of them!!! thankfully...lots are in other stores for display....they are big and useful....and a great focal point in lots of houses....

we do lots of counters or whatever!!! maybe this one will be a bar... or maybe a mission style island
this one is made with an old door and newel posts on the ends...very manly!!! .

we always have lots of decorative tin for sale...old and new....the new comes in 2 ft squares...the old is from old ceilings.... i love using it in projects....especially our counter/bar/island/cashwraps/tvstands.... whatever you call these big guys...they look pretty cool with tin for fronts...sometimes we put the tin in to doors ...this one has old tin in the front and an open back...the new tin is a lot easier to work with than the old....but the old has more depth and contrast....

we get these matching bookcases quite often.

.circa 1910......they start in the depths of Chicago, from old houses being demolished...they were on both sides of a colonnade, the dividing part between 2 rooms....they might have had columns on top reaching up to the ceiling...they are usually pretty rough when we get them...since they were built ins usually a side is gone...

so they start in Chicago, we get the from a picker who goes up there and then they go to our Amish carpenters for total rehabbing and come back to us like this...they were built ins so usually a side has to be replaced...
i think its pretty cool...they have been on the dan ryan, thats a Chicago huge multi lane road, and in a place that still goes by horse and buggy and no electricity..... ...Jon has to pickup and deliver....the Amish do have power tools...but not electric....??? gas i think...

weve done this one a couple of times.... its a buffet and an old headboard....
both parts are from depression era furniture..

finding old headboards is pretty easy....since hardly anyone wants a 3/4 size or even a full size bed anymore..the bottom was an old buffet ...i love the queen anne legs....

we always have lotsof old furniture needing a litttle tlc....just look in our rough room and for old porchposts and doors look out under the awning....

WHY I LOVE JUNK AND ANTIQUES...
.for me its because it pays my bills and buys my groceries!!! mainly....but then it lets me be creative, make things out of good old parts that were deserted...and explore so many design ideas and appeals to my interest in history.... AND THE BEST PART....THE PEOPLE ...i figure the antique /recycling/do your own thing people i meet at the store and out and about and cyber junkers, are about the most interesting, adventurous and fun group of customers anywhere.... like the lady who makes art out of old bedsprings, or the customer who comes in to tell me what to do with old knives, as in take the blade out and make a vase...

4h...CUTE STORY OF THE WEEK.... from a mom, whose daughter made a big collage starting with one of our old windows...she won at the county fair...then went to the state fair and got second....the MAN JUDGE, said she should have sanded it more.... !!!duh!! 4h must have a recycling project we have seen several 4h kids looking for parts...

the depression.... sometimes you get something that just tells you a lot about the depression era....yesterday i got one of those.... an old screen door with a patch in it....
i love the homemade things from back then...like cubby holes made from old cheese boxes......or the totally wild...like a spool of string i found in a box once, with a note...string too small to save.....
so many people are coming out to the store now that the weather has changed....
THANK YOU... we are totally packed with great stuff....and all the really cheap indiana farm junk that spent the winter out under the snow is out in the sun and looking good now!!!

the fun junk area is packed!!! including old bricks, glass bricks, buckets and bikes, ladders windows and doors and tons of misc.....
.... our single pane windows outside are FREE, WHILE THEY LAST...... dh says its looking like a junk yard out there past the truck dock.....

THE BEST CUSTOMER STORY of the week.....this was from a mother whose daughter won in 4h for her window collage...using one of our rough old windows.... she got to go to the state fair....there the MAN judge said she should have sanded it more.. uh, DUH!

we are selling to quite a few 4 h kids....good cheap stuff for their RECYCLED projects...like old chairs,the windows, hooks and brackets..ARCHITECTURAL PARTS...etc etc....id love to see all the projects..... if any send us pictures i will post them..

son jon is getting interested in cement.. we'll be seeing what he comes up with!!!

daughter in law terri is having fun with terris tuesdays on our facebook... so come BE A FAN and S EE WHAT SHE COMES UP WITH...terri is now working the counter on weekdays before the kids get home......she works a lot for the store...but its always been more behind the scenes, on the computer parts and etsy and taking care of jon...lol....

we worked all week on the cold parts....and boy did they need the work...

THE BACK PORCH... what a mess, its been so cold we just totally neglected it all winter and mostly just plopped stuff out there....it kind of piled it up.... but its looking better now...

lots of stained glass, mostly from old buildings in Chicago..some really nice ones that could hang in a window....

.A big pile of iron just came in, including garden rabbits, flying pigs, fairies, hooks and brackets... and iron dress forms....and OUR LANTERNS...
also out there is a lot of old used white furniture...wicker and some metal top tables AND LOTS OF MISC...... just neat shabby odds and ends .. most real cheap!! waiting for someone to save and fix up...

ALSO metal garden flowers and fun glass ball stakes for your garden..and chimes..and some cool door cupboards...

the awning is also full with big piles of architectural and barn junk at one end and our nice big counters at the other ....plus signs and big brushy wreaths...and lots of birdhouses...

we try to keep the counter end under control.... the other end with the doors and shutters, spindles ,posts, barn junk etc etc is usually a big mess....but that works for most of our customers...

we have a junk art area.... and have a constant fight with the sparrows trying to get into the birdhouses...we did plug the holes....now they are trying to get in the rafters...

we have so many windows that some are actually

FREE... that would be the single paned ones outside.... just ask...

OUTSIDE... the junky end is all arranged now and priced...we have some iron pots, bikes, old wood ladders, iron wheels, tubs, tub stands, milk cans, glass bricks, junky chairs, old barn junk....nice big doors and of course about 100 windows.... ...

and lots of old patio furniture.. just needing a little tlc...

THE GARDEN iRON IS about half IN NOW...WE GOT SOME REALLY GREAT THINGS THIS YEAR...INCLUDING BOTTLE TREES... THEY ARE BIG AND NICE...

we are loving being outside in the sun....too many dark dreary days last month!!!

the cupboard barn is full too... so if you need a shelf or cabinet keep us in mind......and thanks so much to those of you who have sent us new store owners who might need fixtures..or great focal points ...we sell to a lot of stores and resturants and salons...

another cold part is the ROUGH ROOM.... its hard to take pictures out there because its so dark and with narrow aisles... but people always go thru it, even back when it was 10 degrees.... right now it has 2 big chicago cupboards in the rough..very rough, .lots of chairs, kids chairs, mirrors, library tables, lots of oak furniture, drop leaf tables, a casket cart... just waiting for new homes... you never know what will be out there...waiting to be recycled!!!

our theory has always been MORE IS BETTER....
like i read somewhere......a minimalist doesnt have much to say...
