customers this week....

our customers are so neat and share so much with us.......this one cut 4 fingers off in her saw...her dh put them in a bowl and they rushed to the hospital..... shes doing so well and we got to see how pretty and pink her reattached digits are.... she said i could put her on my blog...

another customer brought me kind of disgusting news today......it was about a vase i sold for 90$$ he came to see if i still had it....after i said no, he told me hed found it in a book and it was teco .....in case you never heard of teco, its very rare and valuable..and my piece was huge and unmarked....... i thought it might have been teco and did about 10 minutes research on it and couldnt find it.too busy!!!!..so i just put a price on it ...... it was probably worth a whole lot...... so i probably have a happy customer out there..even if he thinks im not the brightest......

.son jon had already heard about it out on his antique rounds.....he calls it word on the street........guess im getting famose....for sellling rare pottery for pennies on the $$...i was afraid of this...and now ive heard it from 2 places....so i guess its true....im looking at it as good advertizing...

crocks

here are some of our new crocks.....and boy did i hear a crock story.....from a lady about 80 yrs old and the crocks made her think of her mom and the depression......
she said.......when we butchered a hog ,mom would make sausage cakes and put them in a crock, then she would pour lard over them then more sausage cakes ...then more lard...layer after layer...in other words it was sealed with the lard.... they would eat one layer and the next layer later....all winter long...it didnt even need a lid....
unimaginable !!! to me..how could it have been safe?
also did they ever clean a jug? how?
anyway...i do love crocks and have a beautiful collection right now....such great indiana antiques.....wish i could justify bringing home the best ones....but i better not...

one of the cutest things was a little tin saying honest snuff...wonder what the other kind is?

i love this business!!! and all the neat stuff... ....and todays pile was totally indiana antiques., right off the farm...... mostly the good daily stuff the 1880s farm woman used...

in this week...........

these are some of the finished projects this week...
i design with both store displays and home use in mind.... we sell wholesale and retail....
....i really like the big wide porchpost open shelf......its around ..300$...i have 2 inthe foo foo room and 2 for sale inthe cupboard barn...its a great store fixture....but would look fabulous in lots of houses too...
next is the big double door cabinet...about 7 ft tall...and about 375$....i love to build christmas displays on these....they hold so much...and definitely make a big statement!!
the carpenter found these nice tall windows making a cool window cabinet...its about 6 ft tall...
i got 3 of these...
we got 2 of the double door window buffets they run about 230$....they have been used for everything from baby changing tables to tv stands....very useful item!!
a true giant also came in today...but we broke the window so it might take a few days to get it out on the floor..
this batch turned out mostly white but i do have some dark ones coming too....these windows were mostly white to start with... so easier to paint white...
any of these can be bought on the phone....just call me....574 223 5702...im going to try and put some prices on the furniture i put on the blog....but you know we dont do shipping...but you can buy and figure it out later......we store for free....
i just ordered 4 new counters from the carpenters...
also i have a real dark mean looking industrial shelf ....with jagged teeth.... it would be great in a modern industrial setting or a spooky halloween display...

style watch...black and white

lately black and white have been selling almost evenly in our shabby rehabbed antique pieces....... lots of the black buyers are liking that it breaks up all the wood tones in their houses..or like a bit of black for a slightly formal look .... and the classic white buyers have all kinds of places for white.. ...some for girls rooms but in the main rooms too....some are putting black chairs with white tables...and lots of homes have a cheery sunny room where white just fits perfectly.....
most men dont like the paint, they prefer the wood.......but the women make the decisions mostly...
buffets are about the most popular thing we have...they are good in foyers, for tvs, often for sinks...and with a big mirror they work for dressers...our buffets have been bought for casual cottage, frilly foo foo , romantic shabby elegant and serious country.. our customers are so creative!!!!

hardly anyone buys these pictured buffets in their original condition...so we paint without guilt.....they are parts of big dining sets from the 30s to the 50s.... we love these with the knobby knees.....they are the hardest to find...we usuallly have a lot of plainer styles and sometimes these with the knobby knees.........
if you come you can usually find some buffets in the rough room to rehabb yourself..from 50$ on up...out there they can have problems!!!...like stuck drawers, rough finishes and bad veneer, wobbly legs... etc etc .....but some are waiting out there and in pretty good shape....
when we rehabb a piece, we try and solve the problems...clean then prepare for paint, then paint.... our dry brush method solves lots of problems....where a perfect solid color would show every flaw...see our paint recipe here http://www.greenoakantiques.com/trashtotreasure.htm sometimes now for our white we have been using more beige under the white...jeff mixes it, so there isnt a color name to share...we call it banana boat for the warm tan,,,and tan for the plain old beige....
jon has buyers all over our area looking for buffets for us...

probably a bad deal...shop talk

here is an ebay trick..... i heard it in the store...it was an older guy, not a dealer...the dealers wouldnt fall for this trick....

..the man had put a piece of carnival glass on ebay......he said he put a high price on it.....someone called him and talked him into selling it to him and taking it out of the auction...

..the guy was happy to sell the item...my guess is that the guy probably undersold the item by a lot....

if it was us....a call like that would give me a big hint that the item i had on was rare and grossly underpriced.... like our ice cream scoop that brought 4500 on ebay...we started it at 50$...jon bought it for a !$, their price, at a flea market...

i would be thrilled to get a call like that....and i would never sell it to the caller..but i would be surper nice because the caller might end up being the wild bidder who would pay many times over my starting price....

...also im pretty sure on ebay you arent supposed to sell ahead.

rehabb yourself........

found this on the net someewhere....sounds good!!

behind the scene

scary week coming up....the upper shop is bursting with christmas....and we really have to make some openhouse decisions.....like how many areas to do..and what goes where...and one more huge order is on its way, this one of great garland and misc decorations is coming mon or tues......all needs to be done by the nov 7 weekend...our big day...

......i know our local economy sucks....and most of our young customers with kids are on budgets...dang!!!!....so ive really tried to have great stuff at nice low prices......and hope for the best....

transforming the whole store while we are open and doing it in 4 days is the big problem....
fun words this week....
..your orphan room....she meant the rough room....you know there is a lot about the antique and used world that is kind of like orphans and orphanages....and finding new homes ...
rehabilitated antique parts....she meant the neat parts we incorporate into our one of a kind big furniture......

door projects

i really love old doors...and we use them for counters, big store fixtures, display cabinets and sometimes for walls....they are plentiful, cheap, and good and solid....we use lots of doors in our projects and have lots of old doors for sale under the awning, usually under 25$....

our big double door open cupboards, running from 300 to 450$, have been turned into tv stands and sinks....but usually they end up as big focal points in a home or a neat cottage/shabby/ rustic accent under a covered porch

lots of our creations end up as store fixtures...often for a real creative store owner, who wants to look big and wonderful and outside the box when it comes to displaying.... they are good for big shabby cottage type store fixtures...here we use them for foo foo, country, fancy shabby, ....they are big and tough and i can nail into them...,

its so good to recycle something so nice from the past..,back when they used real wood and a lot of it...

.here its moved from maybe someones burn pile, from junk, to a big useful very reasonably priced piece of furniture...our big ones are 4 or 5 ft wide and 6 or 7 ft tall...

plus it gives a lot of us around here jobs.... which is always a good thng....

see the little dream sign? its a leftover door panel....

and always thanks to all the scroungers and savers out there who didnt burn their neat old junk...

from last year.....

this is on my mind right now...it looked like this last year....and hopefully will again this year..... right now its all in our heads and packed away in boxes and on its way to us....the big openhouse date for this year is nov 7 8 and 9....its pretty exciting and scary to think about recreating the whole store in a few days.... plus i have so much new and great , i hope , things for this years christmas season....this year we are doing country, foo foo, glitzy and lots of traditional.....
